3 REASONS TO VISIT PATMOS

HOLY PILGRIMAGE

Patmos – otherwise known as the island of the Apocalypse – is located in the North of the Dodecanese island group.  Surrounded by the sapphire blue Aegean Sea, thousands visit it every year.  Many pilgrims seeking to walk the paths first trod by John, one of the 12 Disciples of Jesus.

It is mostly during Easter, when people come closer to God, that visitors to the island flock by the thousands to visit the cave where John is said to have lived the last part of his life.

He lived to nearly a hundred. It is in that cave that he wrote the last book of the Holy Bible – the book of Revelations.

The monastery of Saint John, which looks like a castle adorns the top of the hill and seems to be protecting the islanders and all who visit it.  It is a monastery with nuns who will offer every visitor warm hospitality and any information about the monastery and the Holy Cave.

The Chora – or main town of the island of Patmos is unbelievably beautiful.

The many quaint taverns and cafés flood with people every year.

It is located right beneath the Holy Monastery and has a beauty like no other.

BEACHES FOR ALL …

The beaches of Patmos are amazing too!   Never too crowded and still keep their natural beauty.

Beaches like Psili Ammos (Fine Sand), Agrio Livadi (Wild valley), Petra Beach (Stone Beach) and Paralia Didimes (Twin Beach) are amongst the best.

LOCAL CUISINE

The local cuisine is yet another reason to visit this amazing Greek island.

The traditional cheese pies look more like tarts and taste like nothing you’ve ever tried before.

They are made with the local cheese and the recipe is handed down from mother to daughter, keeping tradition alive throughout the ages.  Other really yummy delicacies are the “poungia” – small pastry pouches stuffed with almonds, walnuts and honey.

If you have a sweet tooth, these are for you!!!
