I’ve been living in Greece for over three decades and never have I seen so many houses decorated for Christmas as early as November!
Homes are normally decorated during the first week of December, around St. Nicholas day on the 6th December.
This year, however, there seems to be something like a competition; who decorates first!
I was thinking about this and I have come up with only one reason for this sudden urge to bring Christmas a whole month earlier into our homes.
WE NEED SOMETHING CHEERFUL IN OUR LIVES!!!
At the sight of a Christmas tree and sparkling lights and other decorations, our heart skips a beat or two.
We are filled with joyful memories of past Christmas celebrations, carols, family, shopping, exchanging gifts and the house filled with sweet scents of Christmas sweets baking in the oven.
NOBODY’S COMING TO DINNER!!!
With the Covid-19 pandemic and many countries literally under lockdown, there will be far too many people celebrating … on their own.
Tragic!
The joy of shopping has been taken from us – it’s mostly online now.
Dining with friends and family is a thing long forgotten.
SO, LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!
WHAT?
Here are some ideas that will definitely make a difference.
- Invite friends and family on zoom or Skype and enjoy a virtual dinner or even just a glass of wine and try to make the most of this situation.
- Have Christmas carols playing all day long; music is therapy and we need it now more than ever!!!
-
Bake – bake – bake!!! Have the little ones join you in the kitchen and make an event of the whole procedure. Give them dough to cut out their own biscuits, etc.
-
Dress up in bright colors – forget about black, grey and brown; these winter colors bring us down
and we need to shift our mood to a more festive one.
